4th Annual A Cool 5 Race Weekend
On Saturday, June 11th , 2011 the Town of Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation will host the 4th Annual A Cool 5 Race to benefit various Parks & Recreation Community Projects. This year’s event will again feature a five mile run traversing beautiful Beech Mountain landscape providing breathtaking 360 degree views. There will also be a 1.5 mile fun run/walk option for those interested in a slower pace, less strenuous option. We are also very excited to announce the addition of a greuling, but beatiful and fun 1/2 Marathon race course! The race weekend festivities will begin with packet pick-up for racers at the Friday night Pasta Dinner. Race day activities start at 7:30am with day-of registration and packet pick-up. The five mile and 1/2 Marathon races will begin at 9:00am and the 1.5 mile fun run/walk will begin at 9:30am. Post-race festivities will include live music and a cook-out. Games and activities will also be available for the family. Discounted registration is available for Town employees, and will only cost $15.00. This will include your race entry, a wicking t-shirt, custom socks, goodie bag, and a post-race meal.
Free Community Health Fair
On Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 the Buckeye Recreation Center will host a FREE Community Health Fair from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 PM. The Health Fair is open to the general public, including all surrounding High Country communities. The health fair will feature FREE vision screening, hearing screening, finger stick glucose readings, as well as body fat, BMI, flexibility, and fitness testing. Behavioral Health Specialists will be here to speak with you about a variety of issues and a wealth of educational information will be at your disposal too. Following the Health Fair we will be hosting a healthy luncheon seminar from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Lunch is optional, however, we do ask that if you would like the lunch option, please register in advance by Friday, May 20th. The cost is $5.00 for the healthy lunch option. Please register by stopping by the Buckeye Recreation Center or calling 828.387.3003. Feel free to come and enjoy the informational luncheon whether you intend to eat or not,. It is FREE for those of you that just wish to reap the educational benefits!
Nutrition Nights
Nutrition Nights are a fun,
instructional opportunity for
you to gain healthy eating
tips while learning how to
prepare healthy meals in the
company of other health
conscious community members.
You will not only learn how to
prepare these great recipes. We will spend a portion of the time exploring the various reasons that our Nutrition Night meal is a
healthier alternative than the
typical family dinner! Don’t
forget you get to enjoy your
delicious meal at the end of the
night! Nutrition Night's are typically held the third Friday of each month. Registration is required and is $5.00 per person.
2011 Biggest Loser Program
The Biggest Loser is a 10 week guided exercise and nutrition program open to the community. This program is designed to help you make positive lifestyle changes by giving you the tools to not only lose weight, but improve your overall lifestyle and reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other medical issues by getting you on track to leading a healthy and active lifestyle! Participants receive a comprehensive Biggest Loser Manual, Pedometers, T-Shirts, Fitness Assessment, and personal instruction and guidance throughout the 10 week program. Lots of great prizes are gained while you work hard to lose and you are motivated by 7 group competitions, get togethers, and educational seminars! Spring Into Shape
The Spring into Shape Program is an initiative to improve the health of our community and those throughout the high country. Spring Into Shape is a personalized six week program designed to provide guidance, encouragement, coaching, and education to help participants achieve a healthier lifestyle and better quality of life. Anyone who needs assistance with making health and fitness decisions to help get on a path to leading a healthier life can benefit from this program.
The Spring Into Shape Program includes:
Comprehensive Initial Fitness Assessment: Body fat, BMI, weight, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, blood pressure, resting heart rate, aerobic fitness testing, and girth measurements. All repeated after 6 weeks.

Group Bike Rides
